That tree would have been very much alive when I was young, and like most of the trees that grew in that spot, they were exposed to the strong winds from the north-east and all grew leaning away from them. I certainly can't remember any yew trees growing there, and when I was at Ocean Road School (left in 1959) I recall Mr Richardson, the Science Teacher saying that Oak trees didn't grow very well in Shields. He claimed there were only two one at the South Marine Park,which he took us to see, and one he says was further in land. We accepted what he said, but of course he could have been wrong about that. I think your speculation about it being a Sycamore is more likely, as they seem to grow anywhere :-).
